And with it, the minivan market is declining rapidly, likely replaced by crossovers. I don’t know about you, but minivans hold a special place in my heart.
Sure, they’re boring to drive, to look at, and they represent a demographic we don’t want to associate ourselves with. Car people liken the purchase of a minivan to the decline of their life style. You know what? I’ll miss the minivan when it finally withers.
We had a 2001 Odyssey when I was growing up. What other car took you to soccer practice, birthday parties at the water park? School? Our Odyssey was the soldier of the family; it fought for our enjoyment. It was our butler; it enjoyed every moment it was thrashed to 114,000 miles, before we sold it eight years ago. It was a part of our family, we loved it like family.
It was family.

The Dodge-branded minivan is going away, but the Chrysler Town & Country is continuing. FCA US wants to reduce overlap between the two brands, so Chrysler gets the minivan and Dodge will get a new large crossover.
Also, the new platform is apparently going to be too expensive to produce to allow for a version priced in the Caravan’s traditional segment.

Wow! That’s actually surprising, since even though minivans don’t sell like they used to, the Caravan is still quite successful. Sold about 300k last year (both Caravan and T+C combined), and one of the top-selling vehicles in Canada.
I wonder if it’s being replaced by a 7-passenger version of the Doblo/Promaster City.

In deep contrast, my mom has a crossover and it is definitely not family. Everyone hates it except for her.

I’m not a truck guy, at all, so when I needed a winter beater/utility vehicle I go myself a minivan and never once regretted it. That thing moved me twice, swallowing a lot more than I would have imagined, and never once got stuck during a winter that saw us get 100 inches overall and had storms that dumped a couple of feet on us at a time. Don’t get me wrong, it was a POS but it was a useful POS.

My parents jumped on the “Mini” van band wagon back in 1998. But of course they didn’t buy you know, a normal one. No, a white with gold stripes over beige one with a truck engine and RWD, because of course they did. It was the family workhorse for 10 years until it was retired to the street for, you guessed it, a crossover. Crossover is already gone and the workhorse is still here 17 years later as an emergency vehicle. I give it a lot of shit for not being a particularly good vehicle, but it’s been around my whole life and I practically grew up in the back of it. It’s an honorary part of the family at this point. We’re selling it soon though. I might actually be sad when it’s gone.

I’ve never really understood why they had two very similar models. A bit like GMC/Chevrolet trucks.

You could say the exact same thing about all CUVs and most SUVs.

People like crossovers more now.
